In 2025, the first pilot year of the 1m2 flax project in the Czech Republic will take place. The project will allow participants to try growing and processing their own 1 m2 of flax suitable for textile use. The project transfer is supported by the Czech-German Future Fund.

How did the project come about?

The 1m2 flax project originated in Sweden. It is originally called 1 KVM LIN and has been organised by Hemslöjden since 2020. In 2020, the project started with three hundred participants and by 2024 it had approximately eight thousand. The project has also gained attention in other European countries. In 2025 it will take place in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and also in the Czech Republic. The Czech pilot year is being developed in cooperation with the German organisation TextilHandWerk e.V., which is the organiser of the 1qm Lein (1m2 of linen) project in Germany.

Why flax?

Flax has historically had an important place in the Czech Republic. It was an important material for textile processing and at the height of its glory it was cultivated on tens of thousands of hectares in the Czech Republic. Today, however, it is unfortunately a craft and industrial asset that we have lost. We want to bring flax back into wider awareness! Will you join us?

What is 1m2 of flax about?

About personal experience. You will experience what it is like to grow and process flax under domestic conditions. The fascinating process of transformation from seed to stalk, fibre to textile will broaden your understanding of the changing value of textiles in history and today.

Who can participate?

Anyone. Participation is not limited by age or experience.

You just need a small space to grow and a willingness to try something new.

How will the project work?

During one seasonal cycle you will receive practical information by email with instructions on growing and processing flax. You will get access to videos and the opportunity to participate in inspirational seminars and workshops. You will meet interesting personalities and, most likely, participating in the project will change your relationship with textiles forever!

Note: Although we will try to provide you with the most accurate cultivation information, we cannot guarantee the success of the harvest. It depends on many factors - weather, soil quality and plant care. Nevertheless, we believe that together we can do it!
